General Overview on HRT & Synthetic Hormones

Progesterone refers to the hormone produced by the body or from a plant source and it is identical to human progesterone. It does not have undesirable side effects! When you put natural progesterone in your body, it signals the body to make the proper chemical reactions. It is like a key fitting into a lock and unlocking the door.

Progestin is a synthetic progesterone that differs in structure to the body's own progesterone and does not create the same reactions in our bodies as natural progesterone. It is like breaking the door down instead of using the proper key to unlock it. This leads to futher imbalances or toxic signals to the body.

Synthetic progestins are manufactured by drug companies and are close to the natural progesterone the body makes, but not identical. The pharmaceutical industry purchases natural progesterone and changes it so that it can be patented and sold as a drug. Substances that are identical to those produced by the body cannot be patented. Progestins have side effects and can be unsafe.

Provera (medroxy-progesterone acetate) is the most common synthetic progesterone. You may remember that in 2002 a study on synthetic by The Women's Health Initiative of the National Institutes of Health was prematurely halted due to deleterious long-term effects on women's health, specifically breast cancer, blood clots, and stroke. The progestins used in the study was Provera!

Natural hormones do not have the dangerous side effects of synthetic HRT. One of the biggests studies we have to date, the Nurse's Health Study, in June 1995 showed that:

  • Women taking estrogen alone had a 36% increase in their risk of breast cancer
  • Women taking estrogen plus progestin had a 50% increased risk of breast cancer
  • Women on progestins alone had a 240% increased risk of breast cancer
  • Women who at the time of the study had been taking estrogen and progestin for five to ten years had a 46% increase in their risk of breast cancer
  • The older a woman was, the higher the risk. Women between the ages of 60-64 who had been taking synthetic hormones for 5 years or more had a 71% risk of developing breast cancer.

We have talked to so many women who have been taking synthetic HRT. They complain of being overweight and unable to shed the pounds off. They are retaining water, many have breasts that have enlarged way beyond their normal size, they can't sleep and are irritable and anxious. Short term memory loss is severe in many of them and they find they cannot focus and some say they have no more "joy" in their life.

This is why so many women have made the switch to natural progesterone or a natural progesterone and phyto-estrogen blend for their symptoms.
