Hair Loss in Men Related to Hormones
Is Natural Progeterone the Answer?
The hormone felt to be directly involved in hair loss in men is actually dihydrotestosterone (DHT) rather than testosterone as many people think.
DHT is formed by the action of the enzyme 5-a reductase on testosterone. DHT acts by binding to special receptor sites on the cells of the hair follicles to cause the specific changes associated with balding.
In men, 5-a reductase activity is higher in the balding area. This helps to explain the reason for the patterned alopecia that males experience.
It has been established that environmental estrogens which cause estrogen levels to rise in men can cause their testosterone to convert to dihydrotestosterone or DHT. DHT also causes prostate enlargement in older men.
DHT decreases the length of the anagen (growing) cycle, and increases the telogen (resting) phase, so that with each new cycle the hair shaft becomes progressively smaller. Follicle size decreases and progressively shorter, finer haris are produced. Eventually these hairs totally disappear.
In addition, DHT causes the bitemporal reshaping of hairline seen as adolescents enter adulthood, as well as patterned baldness (androgenetic alopecia). DHT also causes prostate enlargement in older men and adolescent and adult acne.
DHT affects beard growth, hair on trunk and limbs and male-patterned baldness. This sensitivity to DHT is present mainly in hair follicles that reside in the front, top, and crown of the scalp (rather than the back and sides) producing a characteristic and easily identifiable pattern.
Because the male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is involved in premature hair loss, scientists have experimented with a wide variety of anti-androgens in an attempt to prevent or reverse the process.
Among the antiandrogens that have been used to treat hair loss are progesterone, spironolactone (Aldactone), flutamide (Eulexin), finasteride (Proscar), cimetidine (Tagamet), serenoa repens (Permixon), and cyproter-one acetate (Androcur/Diane).
