According to studies by John R. Lee,
M.D. who used natural progesterone in his practice to treat and
prevent osteoporosis:
-
Estrogen alone can retard but
NOT reverse osteoporosis.
-
Estrogen can not protect against
osteoporosis when progesterone is absent.
-
The addition of natural
progesterone should be beneficial in preventing or treating
premenopausal osteoporosis.
-
Since some estrogen is produced
endogenously (within the body) in postmenopausal women, it is
possible that supplementation with progesterone alone is
sufficient to prevent and/or reverse osteoporosis.
-
Since 1982, Dr. Lee treated
postmenopausal osteoporosis with transdermal natural
progesterone cream included in a program of diet, mineral and
vitamin supplements, and modest exercise, and demonstrated true
reversal of osteoporosis even in patients who did not use
estrogen supplements.
The graph below illustrates the
typical difference in bone mineral density (BMD) changes over a
3-year period between a group of 63 patients. It compares the use of
progesterone supplementation, the typical effect of estrogen-only
treatment, and the natural course of untreated control patients.

In this graph,
it can be seen that:
- the untreated
postmenopausal patient with osteoporosis will lose 1.5%
bone mass per year
- that estrogen-only
supplementation will tend to maintain bone mass
- that only the addition
of natural progesterone will increase bone mass, thus
reversing the osteoporotic process.
